Letter to Our Fellow CBCs

Dr. William Moulton Marston在1928年的著作Emotions of Normal People 中首先提出DISC這個理論。

“Realize what you really want. It stops you from chasing butterflies and puts you to work digging gold.” – William Moulton Marston

———————————

Since 2006, with HKMA and other corporate clients as our partner, we have the privilege of using the DISC Styles assessment and in the process help certify close to 1,200 professionals to learn to use the tool. Each certified professional is given the Certified Behavioral Consultant (CBC) title.

DISC is a personality model that first appeared in the book “Emotions of Normal People” by Dr. William Moulton Marston (Harvard University) in 1928. The model helps to distinguish different personality styles based on understanding and observing behaviors. Some uninformed people have claimed that DISC is about behavioral and not personality styles.

That is interesting as Marston started by studying the motivators beneath behaviors displayed by criminals. From there, he established the drivers behind actions: genetic personality preferences, values etc.

This led to the DISC model as we know it today. At the same time that DISC was in its formative stage, Marston was also researching into behaviors, values, emotions and other factors that might impact behaviors – Integrative Psychology, 1931. So for critics to dismiss DISC by claiming that DISC does not address motivation, they are smearing the good and scientific legacy of Marston’s work.

Since 1928, DISC has comprehensively incorporate different contextual behaviors, genetic personality preferences and values/beliefs to predict behaviors. The model has faithfully evolved to analyze one’s pressure points, needs and behaviors (SNB- Stress, Needs, Behaviors). Our DISC’s 3-graph indicating Context, Stress and Mirror) reflect SNB and stays faithful to Marston’s research findings. Therefore DISC can be a handy tool, but never simple.

Summary

In our CBC certification progress, many participants were surprised that we often tout the advantages of other assessment tools. Our stand is that there is no one best tool. Different tools work best for different needs. Of course, we believe in the usefulness of the Marston’s DISC model and hope that more and more people can benefit from the self-awareness that comes from using the tool.

However, it has been brought to our recent attention that some competitors have been making uninformed and unsubstantiated claims that Marston’s DISC is unreliable and lacking. We strongly question their claims and more importantly, motives/professionalism.

Our DISC certification program is from the Institute of Motivational Living in the U.S. The founder of IML is Dr. Sandy Kulkin who started immersing himself and his organization in researching the DISC model and educating people from all over the world in the use of the tool since 1983.

We, Distinctions Asia, have been IML’s distribution partner in Asia for the last 15 years. We had encountered instances of copyright violation, clients asking for verification of our partnership with IML. We have stood tall throughout.

We have been slightly understated and low-profile, preferring to focus on serving our faithful clients rather on marketing and promoting ourselves. We respect all assessment tools and end with a quote from Marston: “Realize what you really want. It stops you from chasing butterflies and puts you to work digging gold.” – William Moulton Marston
